Electro? Kind of a cool name, isn't it? But it's more than just a hip name, it's meaningful too. Electro is short for electromechanical. The new Nord Electro only emulates electromechanical keyboards...Rhodes, Wurlitzers, Clavinets, Hammonds. You know, all those extremely heavy keyboards that you just have to have...that take up too much space...and make your roadies hate you more and more. The Electro is the keyboard for you and is available in a lightweight, 61 or 73 note model. Outstanding electromechanical keyboard sounds with true feel, from fast keyboard response to authentic sound.
The sounds, the sounds, it's all about the sounds. Especially when you are emulating these vintage keyboards. People who play these instruments can be pretty discerning...you know who you are. The Electro doesn't disappoint. The organ sounds are based on digital simulations of B3 tone wheels. From the digital drawbars to the Percussion and Chorus/Vibrato sections, to full polyphony, all the nuances are there. Using an expression pedal, you'll be able to do swells, which is the characteristic B-3 volume pedal function. As you increase the volume, the tone will also change...just as it does on a real B3. The keyboard split feature makes it possible to play an organ sound with two different drawbar settings (Lower and Upper manuals) on the internal keyboard. You can even connect another MIDI keyboard and have a two manual keyboard, each with it's own drawbar setting.
But the Electro does more than just organs. It does pianos too. Boy does it do pianos!! The piano section is comprised of four carefully multi-sampled electric piano instruments: Rhodes Mk II Stage Piano, Wurlitzer 200A, Clavinet D6 and CP-80 Electric Grand. Just as with the organs, all the nuances of these instruments are there. Hard hits, soft hits, get dirty, get clean...you name it, it responds.
The effects section on the Electro is extremely cool and useful. Overdrive, Rotary Speaker simulation (slow, fast, stop), Equalizer, Chorus (2 types), Flanger (2 types), Phaser (2 types), Tremolo, Wah-Wah (2 types), Auto Wah, Auto panning and Ring modulation. Slap some overdrive on an organ sound to make it scream or put some wah-wah on a clavinet sound to really funk out. The effects really add to the realism of the sounds.
The Electro is a sturdy keyboard with very cool wooden sides (that, appropriately, are stained red). The keyboard is very responsive and feels more like a real instrument than a synth. The keys are full, square keys...(more like a Hammond) and really compliment the type of playing that you do with these types of sounds. Trills, Smears, Hiccupping (is that a word?)...you can do it all.
That's the thing about the Electro. It can do it all...as far as electromechanical instruments are concerned.
