Let's start with the sounds. 128MB of Wave ROM, 128 Notes of Polyphony...This is Roland's strongest synthesizer to date. Each Fantom can be expanded using Roland's SRX expansion library, and you can add the genre of sounds that you need. Working on orchestral composition? For example, Roland offers a few SRX expansions that specifically addresses orchestra samples. See below for a current list of SRX expansion boards. In addition, the built-in sampler can be used to create your own new sounds, or to play samples from third party sound libraries. A USB port offers a convenient way to import (and export) .WAV/AIFF files for the ultimate in sound flexibility. Best of all, because the Fantom-X is 128 note polyphonic, you'll be able to use these sounds simultaneously for composition without quickly running out of notes. It will take a lot to "max" out the capabiliity of the Fantom-X. Working with the Fantom-X is a dream...Those are words not used before when speaking of a Roland synth. While Roland has produced some of the most powerful digital instruments, learning how to get at that power was sometimes a daunting task. Not anymore. We all had big smiles on our faces when we turned our first Fantom-X on and viewed the large COLOR LCD display. Wow! It's easy to read and uses great pictures and icons to aid in navigation. For instance, suppose you want to adjust the the brightness of a piano sound. Using the data wheel, you can actually open and close the lid of the grand piano, and the screen shows it happening. The sound brightens up as the lid is opened, and mellows as the lid is closed. This is just one example of how Roland has used this display to help with the user interface. You can imagine how easy it will be to work with the sequencer and sampler with this big screen. Full mixer shots, waveform editing, etc. make operating the Fantom-X like you would on a computer. The feature set goes on: Skip Back Sampling (the sampler is always recording, so you're sure to capture an idea as you're just noodling around), a powerful effects section, 32 megabytes of sample RAM is standard (expandable to 544 MB with optional DIMMs), and much more.
