Roland XP-80 76-note Music Workstation The XP-80 is Roland's flagship workstation, and is what many consider the perfect workstation. It's priced right, has a ton of great sounds, a powerful sequencer with a disk drive, and a nice feeling 76-note keyboard. Sounds & Effects...The XP-80 offers 512 internal sounds, including a General MIDI set, and several drum kits. You'll find pianos, electric pianos, synth-type sounds, basses, brass, strings, and more. It offers something for everyone! In addition, the XP-80 is expandable. Roland put 4 slots on the bottom of the keyboard that houses 4 of their 8 megabyte expansion boards. These boards can be user installed, and they all offer up to 255 new sounds from Roland's sound library. Want more orchestral sounds? Rather than purchase a new keyboard or module, simply add a Roland Orchestral Expansion Board! The XP-80 also features a nice effects section that enhances the sound. The keyboard has a reverb, a chorus, and several "insert effects" including distortion, flange, delay, overdrive, a rotating speaker simulator, and more. There is also a multi-function arpeggiator that is quite useful for a number of applications...it will simulate guitar pickings and strummings, as well as reproducing sounds from older, analog synthesizers. Sequencer...Every workstation's heart is the sequencer, and the XP-80 delivers. You get a 16 track sequencer, and the large LCD display aids in allowing you to us the powerful editing features. There's even a built-in disk drive to save your work. The disk drive also plays MIDI files created on the XP-80 or computer without even loading them in! This is great for live performance...simply put your disk full of tunes in the XP-80, skip to the track you want to play, and hit the start button. The drive will also play any file downloaded from the net without any problem. Another nice live feature is the click output. If you're using a live drummer, but are playing to a sequence, you can use the provided click output to send your drummer a click (or another sound of the drummer's choice) to headphones or your choice of amplification. He/she won't be guessing where the beat is anymore! This is a feature keyboards should have had long ago! If your application warrants a workstation, you won't be sorry you bought this one.
