In addition to the powerful sound engine, premium keyboard action, and stylish appearence, the Clavinova CSP-170 containes unique features that will teach anyone how to play their favorite songs right out of their music library. Users can adjust the speed at which they’re learning, as well as the difficulty of the piano arrangement as they improve.
Let's take a look at the Yamaha CSP-170…
The Clavinova Sound
Besides featuring an impressive library of sounds, including a variety of electric pianos and organs, CSP-170 features expertly sampled sounds from two world class pianos: the Yamaha CFX 9' Concert Grand and the legendary Bösendorfer Imperial. From light staccato and powerful strikes, to the "key-off" sound when a pianist's fingers lift from the keys, the essence of these pianos has been captured in world-class sound studios.
The nine-foot CFX is a full sized concert grand piano characterized by a wide palette of tonal colors and the ability to create the subtlest expressive nuances. The CFX was one of the Yamaha's most ambitious projects and greatest achievements, and no expense was spared to confirm that what you hear in the CLP lives up to the reputation of the original.
Bösendorfer has been perfecting the craft of piano creation for over 185 years. The legendary 97-key Imperial Grand has been serving artists from Franz Liszt to Tori Amos since 1909, offering the largest soundboard of all concert grands and a characteristic warm tone known as the "Viennese Sound." From dramatic presence and power to tender passion, every subtlety of this $300,000 masterpiece is at your fingertips with Clavinova.
The body resonance of a piano is every bit as important as the strike of the hammer on the string. CSP-170 offers a powerful 45W + 45W stereo speaker system that directs the sound through its body, allowing the wood to resonate just as if the strings were vibrating from within. Tone escape ports allow the sound to release from the body, recreating how sound will spread from a grand piano. Yamaha's proprietary Acoustic Optimizers regulate the flow of sound, delivering a natural, smooth sound across the entire instrument.
Virtual Resonance Modeling
When you play a grand piano, the sound you hear is a culmination of many elements resonating throughout the instrument. Virtual Resonance Modeling fills in gaps that even the most detailed piano samples might miss, by calculating the various states of the strings for each of the 88 notes on the keyboard from one instant to the next. This exclusive technology takes into account a limitless number of factors inherent to the piano, such as which keys are pressed, the strength with which the keys are played and pedal timing.
From advanced construction methods to samples of legendary pianos, Yamaha's acoustic and digital piano experience combine to offer an incredible sound that is unique to Clavinova. The recorded tones and physical construction come together to offer an organic experience like no other digital instrument.
The CSP-170 also contains hundreds of different Accompaniment Styles that can be controlled in real-time chords on the keyboard. Accompaniment Styles introduce ensembles of virtual musicians to your performances in a variety of musical genres. From small jazz ensembles to full orchestras, you control what chords or harmony they play based on what YOU play. Plus, you control the dynamic of the ensemble. Developed by professional session musicians from around the world, Styles let you recreate sound ranging from a small band to a full orchestra - even if you’re playing by yourself. You can use Styles to add embellishing Intros, Endings & Fill-Ins, and even arrange songs in real-time.
The Clavinova Touch
When considering the experience of playing an acoustic piano, the touch is every bit as important as the sound. Yamaha's experience creating acoustic and digital pianos alike comes together in Clavinova to offer a remarkably realistic feel.
Yamaha Natural Wood X (NWX) Keyboard
Yamaha Natural Wood X (NWX) keyboards are created using Yamaha's unrivaled woodworking expertise acquired through more than a century of crafting fine acoustic pianos. The material used for NWX keyboards is cut from wood that has been carefully dried, and chosen specifically for use in making musical instruments. Only the best wood from the finest part of the tree is selected, resulting in a keyboard that is more resistant to buckling and warping than common laminated wood keyboards. By using a similar hammer mechanism (with no springs) as the one found in a grand piano, the NWX keyboard action reproduces the touch of an acoustic instrument, from the heavier feel in the lower register to the lighter touch in the upper octaves. It also features a three-sensor configuration which accurately senses and interprets the behavior of the keyboard to create a response and feel very much like that of a grand piano.
The escapement mechanism in a grand piano moves the hammers away from the strings quickly after they strike them, in order to prevent any interference with string vibration. This is something you can often feel in a grand piano, especially during light playing. Even this modest detail is not lost in Clavinova, as Yamaha's Escapement feature recreates the feel of the let-off and hammer drop on a grand piano when a key is played very softly.
Synthetic Ebony & Ivory keytops
Recreating the experience of playing a world-class grand piano wouldn't be complete without offering keys that feel remarkably like Ivory. Synthetic Ebony & Ivory keytops feature a highly absorbent material that prevents fingers from slipping, while retaining the ideal tactile texture to reproduce the sensation of playing on the keyboards used on classic acoustic pianos.
GP Response Damper Pedal
The damper pedal on an acoustic piano functions like a lever system to raise the damper off the strings. Yamaha's GP Response Damper Pedal feels heavier as you push it further down, just like the damper pedal on an acoustic piano. This allows a player to have a more consistent experience between playing the CSP-170 and a grand piano.
The Digital Advantage
While every effort has been made to offer an acoustic piano experience, saving money on piano tuning is hardly the greatest advantage to owning a digital piano. Yamaha offers state-of-the-art technologies in Clavinova digital pianos, allowing you a greater opportunity to explore your creativity and utilize modern technology to improve your playing.
Tablet-based user interface
Utilize your smart device like an iPad or Android tablet to tap into the many advanced features included on the CSP-150. This helps keep the elegant look of a traditional piano, while allowing you to access advanced features with a simple and well-designed interface on your tablet.
Stream Lights, unique to Yamaha Clavinova, show you which notes to play and when to play them. Four LED lights above each key move towards the keys to show the timing of the next note in the song. Stream Lights are useful when you’re in Guide Mode, where a midi song displays the next note and waits for you to play it before proceeding. But they’re also great when used with the Audio to Score feature of the CSP, with the user’s own library of audio song files. While Audio to Score doesn’t work with Guide Mode (which waits for you), the tempo of audio songs can be slowed down to learn at a comfortable pace as you progress.
Audio to Score Mode
The Smart Pianist app's Audio to Score feature scans the songs in the music library on your smart device. It analyzes the audio, and then produces a piano score that can be customized to your liking. Change the score to be more rhythmically complex to challenge yourself, or to match the feel of the song. The Stream Lights on the CSP will intuitively light up above the correct keys to play, and will also show you when to play them. A chord chart is also produced to that you can follow along with your own voicings, if that is your preferred method of reading. If a chord or the tempo is analyzed incorrectly, quick and easy adjustments can be made. The chord information can even be converted to MIDI, allowing your CSP Clavinova to play back the chords to the song using the accompaniment Style of your choosing. Never before has technology made it so easy to learn how to play your favorite songs!
Pitch Shift for Audio Playback
The powerful pitch shift feature lets you change the key of your audio song without changing the tempo. If you want to change the tempo, you can use the time stretch feature to slow down or speed up the tempo without changing the pitch.
Connect your portable music player to the Aux Line Input jack and enable Melody Suppressor to isolate and reduce the volume of the lead vocal or lead melody for the song you're listening to. This leaves room for you to sing the lead, or play the melody along with your favorite tracks.
The 1/4" microphone input allows you to connect a microphone so that you can sing along while you play. You'll hear your voice through the instrument's speaker system and anything the microphone picks up can also be recorded to USB audio. You can even use Vocal Harmony2 to sing along with three of your own virtual background vocalists. Vocal Harmony2 takes that a step further with new pitch recognition and stability controls.
Binaural CFX Sampling
Binaural sampling allows for an incredible experience when playing through headphones. This is a highly sophisticated recording technique in which a special combination of microphones are used; including two installed into the ears of a model human head so that the sound reproduced is that from the pianist's perspective.
Intelligent Acoustic Control (IAC)
Certain audio frequencies can stand out or fade away, depending on the volume at which you are playing. Clavinova's Intelligent Acoustic Control automatically adjusts the sound so that bass and treble will remain balanced, even at low volumes.
