Designed in conjunction with original MiniKorg 700 creator Fumio Mieda, Korg MiniKorg 700FS is an authentic revival of the two-oscillator MiniKorg700S variant that adds aftertouch, an arpeggiator and onboard spring reverb along with modern conveniences like patch memory, a pitch/mod joystick and MIDI, USB and CV/gate connectivity. To commemorate its revival, this limited edition ships with a custom hard case.
Why revive MiniKorg 700 now?
Ten years have passed since Korg released Monotron, a next-generation analog product developed by young Korg engineers and analog enthusiasts. It took some time for the full vision of these engineers to be explored and delivered but at last they have arrived – at the start. MiniKorg 700FS was created by Korg analog engineers under the supervision of original designer Fumio Mieda, ensuring the elements that go beyond vintage schematics stay faithful to his vision.
'Sub keyboards' and front-panel controls
MiniKorg 700 came about as a 'sub keyboard' that players would set atop their 1970s organs to augment the organ's sound palette. Because of this, the controls were laid out below its keys in a row across the front panel, so that players who set the instrument on top of their organs would find them easy to access. Even today this layout is intuitive and easy to understand, with a unique look that no other instrument offers.
Traveler controller
Among the defining characteristics of MiniKorg 700 was its Traveler controller, consisting of two stacked horizontal slide pots that adjust cutoff frequencies for the low pass and high pass filters. By moving the levers while playing, wah- and muted-type sound could be created, along with the iconic 'traveling' sound. Vintage models had protrusions on the sliders to prevent silence at their crossing that some players actually filed off in search of new sounds; fortunately, MiniKorg 700FS gives you the option to swap them out.
A second oscillator
MiniKorg 700 was a single-oscillator monosynth. MiniKorg 700S, released a year later in 1974, populated some new left-of-keyboard panel real estate with controls for a second oscillator, a ring modulator and more. MiniKorg 700FS is actually a revival of the 700S model with the expanded functionality and therefore includes two oscillators for detuning and thick, penetrating lead synth sounds.
Added functionality
Korg's engineers found space inside MiniKorg 700FS to add a spring reverb tank and even some space on the top panel for a handy pitch/modulation joystick. The new version also adds aftertouch and an arpeggiator and expands connectivity with USB, MIDI and CV/gate connections. Best of all, Korg added a memory program button, so there's no need to write down the positions of the knobs and levers to recreate your favorite sounds.
Hard case included
To commemorate the revival of MiniKorg after nearly half a century, Korg is including a hard case with the limited edition MiniKorg 700FS designed especially for this product.
