True six-operator FM synthesis – and more
OpSix is a digital synthesizer designed around a six-operator sound generator. Although the instrument has a six-operator FM sound structure like classic FM synthesizers, OpSix doesn't just reproduce their sounds – it totally reimagines them. With a diversity of waveforms, operator modes that go beyond the realm of FM and a filter that brings together a fusion of subtractive synthesis, OpSix tames the complexities of FM so that you can focus on exploring sounds instead of programming them. Simply put, OpSix offers the editing simplicity of analog synths to control the power of arguably the deepest type of digital synthesis.
FM exploration, easier than ever
OpSix's knobs and sliders with two-color LEDs let you quickly and clearly see the relationships among operators, whose roles change with each algorithm. This lets you make direct changes to the pitch and volume for carriers, to the brightness of the sound or the strength of the harmonics for the modulators. These controls give you sonic control over the unpredictability of FM just by subtracting and adding sounds as if you were using a DJ mixer or organ drawbars.
Full editing with DATA ENTRY knobs
Use the six context-sensitive DATA ENTRY knobs for full editing without minimizing or summarizing any information. The combination of six graphical parameters on the large OLED display at the center and these rotary encoders means you can edit without getting lost, a far cry from traditional FM synths and their paucity of controls.
The HOME/ALGO page is the starting page for everything on OpSix and features major parameters including algorithms, EGs and effects. Use this page and the operator mixer to get started with everything you need to do.
Five operator modes that expand FM synthesis
So OpSix is a collection of everything appealing about FM synthesis – but that's not all. Aside from sine waves, OpSix offers an expanded list of diverse waveforms in pursuit of sounds with even more complex harmonics, which can also be used as a subtractive synth offering simple filtering. Operator modes on OpSix are used to generate sounds completely outside what a traditional FM sound generator can provide; these operator modes let you create sounds using modulation other than FM. OpSix offers you a much wider range of sound creation, letting you combine the five operator modes – FM, Ring Mod, Filter, Filter FM and Wave Folder – and select from a wide range of waveforms.
40 preset algorithms and user algorithms
An algorithm is a combination of different operator roles and connections. OpSix goes far beyond classic FM synthesizers by offering 40 preset algorithms and then goes on to offer a user algorithm function for exponentially greater sound possibilities, letting you construct and arrange an algorithm from scratch.
Wide range of modulation
The synthesis offered by OpSix is made even more powerful with the processors that come at the end of the signal chain. The MOD section works separate from the operators, with three EGs and three LFOs, and 12 modular-style virtual patches make a wide variety of routing possible. Use these features for a huge range of modulation, creating everything from gentle swelling to rapid motion in your sounds.
Powerful filters
In contrast to FM, the FILTER section follows your creation of sounds by offering analog synthesizer-like subtractive synthesis. Select from a full range of filters you want to use, from the radical MS-20 low pass / high pass filter to the powerful-yet-soft Polysix low pass filter that gives your sound a vintage feel, as well as two- or four-pole low pass, high pass, band pass and band reject filters with resonance.
A treasure trove of effects
The high-definition effects you'll find on OpSix can be used right away in recording. The instrument offers three simultaneous series of 30 different effects; from standard effects like compressor, EQ, chorus, flanger, phaser and stereo delay to distinctive effects like rotary speakers, grain shifters and more, as well as shimmering reverb effects that add a new dimensions to already awesome sounds.
Spectrum analyzer and oscilloscope
The analyzer built into OpSix is a must-have feature for visualizing FM synthesis. It shows output levels for each frequency band so that you can see at a glance the distribution and changes to the harmonics caused by modulation. OpSix also features a built-in oscilloscope that lets you check the output waveforms. The colorful changes to the sound and visual feedback are sure to draw you into a deep synthesizer vortex.
Powerful 16-step polyphonic sequencer
The 16 buttons on the bottom right-hand part of the panel glow green with colors that evoke FM synths while providing you with a multipurpose 16-step sequencer. With this onboard polyphonic note sequencer, you can record up to six notes per step and edit the velocity, gate time and playback timing for each note. This lets you create long phrases or make subtle shifts in timing to emulate strums or drum rolls, something not possible on a typical 16-step sequencer. The motion sequencer lets you record changes for up to six parameters, creating smooth motion changes in sound within a phrase or building rhythms that change dramatically with each step. OpSix offers the best of both worlds: an easy-to-use 37-note keyboard and a sequencer to rival grooveboxes. Just press the PLAY button – you'll be floored by the power this sequencer lets you unleash.
Adding unpredictability to sounds with the Randomize feature
Use the Randomize feature borrowed from Korg Wavestate if you're in the mood for unexpected sonic discoveries: press the button marked with the dice icon to generate a newly randomized sound. You can use the Randomize feature for the entire sound or just for the operators, the algorithm or the sequences. Use the randomized sounds as-is or edit them as you like – the sky's the limit.

Operator modes
Although the basis of OpSix is the FM sound generator, you can change the operator mode to perform different kinds of modulation besides FM. The combination of ring modulator, filter and wavefolder makes it possible to create new kinds of sounds that surpass the range of typical FM sounds.
An Operator includes an input, an output and an oscillator. The carrier's operator mode determines how the oscillator is modulated by the input of the modulator. This modulation gives the sound its character. In addition to FM, Ring Mod, Filter, Filter FM and Wave Folder operator modes, OpSix features Mute and Bypass modes that are useful when editing.
FM mode
In this mode, when the LFO is used to raise and lower the pitch you will hear a vibrato-like effect. FM (frequency modulation) is an ultra high-speed vibrato. The phase of an oscillator is modulated using the input signal from the modulator, which rapidly raises and lowers its pitch. As modulation is incredibly fast, we hear the result not as vibrato but as a change in tone. In this operator mode, we can use the FB and WIDTH parameters to control the amount of self-feedback and the width of the oscillator waveform.
Ring Mod mode
Modulating the amplitude of a signal creates tremolo. Ring modulation, or Ring Mod for short, is ultra-fast tremolo. The input signal from the modulators is multiplied with the carrier oscillator to rapidly change the amplitude of the signal. As with FM, the extremely fast modulation is perceived as a change in tonal character. The input from the modulator(s) can be processed by a rectifier, where the SHAPE parameter controls the amount of rectification. The larger the value, the more overtones will be added.
Filter mode
This is a filter with a key tracking function. The input signals from the oscillator and modulator(s) are input into the filter. The OSCMIX parameter controls the amount of the oscillator signal fed to the filter. The cutoff frequency is synchronized to the oscillator pitch and the CUTOFF parameter adds an offset.
Filter FM mode
Modulating a filter's cutoff with an LFO creates an effect like a wah pedal. Filter FM creates an ultra high-speed wah effect. The cutoff frequency is modulated using the input signals from the modulator(s), and the oscillator signal is used as audio input for the filter. As with Filter mode, the modulation center frequency is synchronized with the oscillator pitch and you can use the CUTOFF parameter to add an offset.
Wave Folder mode
This is a waveshaping effect. The wave folder circuit generates harmonics by inverting the waveform of the input signals from the oscillator and the modulator at a fixed threshold. The OSCMIX parameter controls the amount of the oscillator signal fed into the wavefolder.
