This acoustic/electric nylon-string Grand Concert from Taylor's Academy Series may be the best nylon-string guitar you'll find for the money. The underlying design goal of the series is to make the acoustic guitar accessible to more players by bringing Taylor's legendary playability and tone into an affordable price range. One of the benefits of a nylon-string guitar is that the light string tension is easy on the fingertips. Another inviting feature is a built-in armrest to enhance the playing comfort. Tonally, the wood pairing of layered sapele back and sides with a solid Lutz spruce top, together with the body's internal bracing, project a warm, mellow nylon voice with crisp percussive appeal that suits a variety of musical styles and responds well to both fingerpicking and flatpicking. The onboard ES-N pickup and preamp captures that nylon character and give you additional tone-shaping control. Whether you're a steel-string player looking to add an affordable nylon-string to your acoustic toolbox or crave a great-sounding acoustic guitar that's easy on the hands and the wallet, the A12e-N is an option well worth exploring.
Grand Concert Body Shape - The small-body Grand Concert debuted in 1984 to meet the needs of a new wave of adventurous acoustic fingerstyle players. In contrast to the traditionally darker, boomier voices of bigger body styles like dreadnoughts and jumbos, the GC's compact size and tapered waist kept the overtones in check. It was also more comfortable to play while sitting down, and the guitar's slightly wider neck gave players more room for complex fingerings. The GC's smaller sonic footprint also fit cleanly in a mix with other instruments when tracking in the studio and with a band on stage, making it a useful tool for professional session and side players. Taylor's current generation of GC models continues to accommodate fingerstylists with finger-friendly traits like a shorter 24 7/8-inch scale length, which makes fretting easier and adds a slightly slinkier feel on the strings due to the lighter string tension. If you feel more comfortable with a small body or favor controlled overtones, a Grand Concert is a great option.
Lutz Spruce Top - A naturally occurring hybrid of Sitka and White spruce, Lutz grows in climate zones between where Sitka and White spruce are found. In terms of acoustic response, Lutz blends the positive characteristics of Sitka and White spruce and its close cousin, Engelmann spruce. The Lutz that Taylor uses for the 500 Series tends to exhibit characteristics of Adirondack spruce. The result is powerful sonic horsepower that translates into strong volume, projection and tonal richness.
Layered Sapele Back and Sides - Taylor's layered backs and sides incorporate three layers of wood, featuring a middle core of poplar with a veneer on each side. While layered woods won't produce quite as complex a sound as solid woods, they allow a blend of exotic looks with climate-resilient construction.
ES-N Electronics - The ES-N is a single-source, under-saddle transducer featuring a preamp and tone controls that were customized to complement the nylon-string voice. Our standard Expression System control knobs enable plenty of tone-shaping and preserve the natural design aesthetic. Installed on nylon-string models.
Non-Cutaway Design - There's a lot to be said for the clean, traditional look of a non-cutaway acoustic guitar, which is why we offer a line of non-cutaway models. If you don't plan to play in the upper register, or simply prefer the symmetrical hourglass contours of a guitar, a non-cutaway model is a great option.
Taylor Hard Bag Included - The Taylor Hard Bag blends the protective properties of a hard case with the lightweight portability of a gig bag. It features a tan, 600-denier exterior and a 70-denier interior that's reinforced at the peghead and tail end. Supportive structure includes rigid PVC sidewalls, full-length Correx/EPE foam hard top and back, and an EPE foam neck rest with a hidden internal pocket.
